The Frances Mine I refer to is Indiana County about 3 miles from Punxsutawney which is of course in Jefferson County. Andrew Yusko (wife Frances) my grandfather worked in the mine and his eldest John Yusko also worked there. My grandparents owned 20 acres in Smyerstown which is where the mine is located with the mine entrance just a few hundred yards away. The tracks leading to the entrance bordered the property with the farmhouse situated maybe a hundred feet away. The tracks lead to the wye where the tracks from the nearby Rossiter mine met. My grandfather John Dragos and his eldest my father John Dragos as youth worked in the Rossiter Mine alongside his father. When my father married my mother Helen he worked in the Frances mines with Andrew Yusko. The farm property rests above Francis Mine and is still in the family being purchased by my nephew from me only last year.

My paternal Grandfather John Dragos also worked the mines in Armstrong County such as Sagamore and in Yatesboro along side with his brother Martin Dragos and Stephen Dragos. My paternal grandmother Mary nee Harenchar's father John Harenchar worked the mines in Cambria County such as Carroltown. Her brother John Harenchar Jr. who lost a leg presumably in a mining accident and again presumably as a young boy in which case would have been in Cambria County. Would there be any source to confirm such an accident. When he registered for the draft in 1918 it was recorded that he lost his leg in a "manger".

I'm 77 years of age and as a boy my parents who left the area in 1925 moved to New York City and would have us kids spend our summers on the farm in the 1930's when the mines were still operating but on a limited basis.

An uncle John (Jack) Dalesky also worked the Rossiter Mine. A disabled vet of WW I lived in Smyerstown until he left in the late 1950's to join his daughter in Colorado.

All my grandparents came from eastern Slovakia at the turn of the century. Would be interested in your ethnicity.

Robert Dragos
