A Memorial Honor Roll for the Coal Miners that Worked the
Foster Mines


Following is a partial listing of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Foster Mines, Foster, Conemaugh Twp., Indiana Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Fox, Patrick
(Miner, ca.1890, Foster Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 55, married, 2 children.);
(Killed. Mr. Fox was killed instantly by a fall of center slate, in the Foster Mine, December 8, 1890. The coal seam is about six feet thick and at that point in the mine where Fox was working there was a center slate of about four to seven inches thick, located in the seam, about three and one-half feet from the floor. He had blasted down the under branch of the seam, but neglected to take down the center slate which was very much shattered from the effects of the shots, and rather than spend some time in making the place safe, he lay down under the loose slate and commenced bearing-in, and although he was told of its dangerous condition by Mr. Buck [a fellow miner], he did not attempt to make himself safe, consequently he lost his life by gross negligence.)

(Injured.  Leg broken, finger amputated and head cut by mining machine.  He was moving the machine to another room, was walking backwards drawing the machine cable with him.  His foot caught in a switch and the mining machine ran on him, in the Foster No. 3 Mine, Feb. 20, 1908.)
