[Penn Gas Coal Company sank a shaft No. 2 at the bottom of Adam's Hill.  Until 1910 only company supervisor's lived on the hill.  In 1910 and 1911 the local miners went on strike and the coal company, in order to comtinue operating, recruited southern scabs and eastern European men to work in their place.  The coal company built houses for them on Adam's Hill, after that the Hill was called "Scab Hill."]

[Slickville was located on the Turtle Creek Branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad.]
[Slickville is best known for its name which is tied to its history. As with so many other Appalchian mining communities Slickville was named for a mining official: Donald Slick of the Cambria Steel Company in this case. Slickville was founded in 1917 and included many of the amenities not found in older company mining towns. It also benefitted from a relatively large 'downtown' area that was shared between it and the adjacent town of Jamison (or Elrico) and the nearby Patton.
Slickville's heyday lasted until 1943 when the mines was closed.]

[Originally a nameless village located where the streetcar route left old Rt. 30 on its way to Jeannette.  In 1900 the village was noteworthy because of a large pile of straw that appeared in the winter, in front og the log cabin inn.  Informed that the straw covered a pump to keep it from freezing, the conductor of the street called out "Strawpump" as the car stopped at the village.]
