HISTORY:
The Dilltown No. 1 Mine was a drift mine which mined the 48 inch "B" or Miller coal seam.  In 1917 the power used in the mine was electricity.  Ventilation was provided by a 6 foot diameter Sirocco fan.

In ca.1917 the Dilltown No. 1 Mine produced 222,693 tons of coal, with 190 men and boys employed.

(From the U.S. Bureau of Mines Report.)

5 Killed.

About 7:30 a.m. shortly after the 80 men began work, an explosion confined to a small section killed 5 men in that section.  Three others who were over come were rescued by a foreman and firebosses, who immediately restored ventilation.  The weak explosion was caused by ignition of gas by an arc from an electric hoist in room No. 12.  The fireboss had not examined the section before the men entered.  Dust was involved only to a minor degree.

The 1930s brought with it much labor unrest among the Dilltown miners. In January 1932, the Dilltown home of a mine superintendent was blown up with dynamite, and several months later, a riot at the Smokeless Mine sent six men to the local jail.
