| DESCRIPTION: Coal Run, Clune P.O., Young Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania consists of 4 patches of coal company built houses, the former mine office building, and the recreation hall, with various additions. The coal company store building burnt down year ago. |
| HISTORY: The Coal Run Mining Company also had interests in the Jacksonville Field, and made its first shipment on January 16, 1913. The Coal Run operation was privately owned by Lucius Waterman Robinson, who at the time was still president of the Rochester & Pittsburg Coal & Iron Company. The coal company patch town that grew up around the Coal Run Mines were located between McIntyre and Aultman on the the Coal Run spur line from the Jacksonville Branch of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburg Railway. Nearly 75 houses made up the coal town formerly known as the Clune Post Office and appropriately named Coal Run. Eventually ten deep mines and a surface strip mine were operated at the site. In ca.1914, one year after their opening, the first three mines at Coal Run produced 103,101 tons of coal and employed 194 men and boys. The coal Run Mining Company officially became a part of Rochester & Pittsburg Coal & Iron Company in 1931, and after that date the former Coal Run Mines were renamed the "Kent Mines." The name "Kent" was derived from a family connection of the Iselins with the Copunty of Kent, England. Kent No. 7 Mine, however, was formerly known as the "Harriet Mine," in honor of the wife of Lucius Watrerman Robinson, Jr.
In 1920 FBI agents from Pittsburgh arrest nine miners at Coal
Run, Indiana County, for communist activities. Two are considered for
deportation. State Police and FBI agents later arrest an anarchist at Sagamore,
Armstrong County, for possessing a large quantity of anarchistic
literature. |

| Holy Cross Church was built in Coal Run,
Indiana County, Pennsylvania in ca.1945. A number of residents of McIntyre
and other nearby mining communities were members of the Byzantine Rite
Catholic Church, also called the Eastern Catholic Church. This church follows
the traditions of Orthodoxy but gives allegiance to the Pope. Stylistically,
the church has two cupolas and a number of stained glass windows.
This church is located a few miles from McIntyre in the town of Coal Run. Coal Run was also one of the seventeen mining towns controlled by the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company. |
