A Memorial Honor Roll for the Coal Miners that Worked the
Climax Mines (Lincoln Mine)


Following is a partial listing of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Climax Mines (Lincoln Mine), Climax (Lincoln), West Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Foot squeezed between two mine wagons that became derailed on top of the plane. Outside of the Climax No. 2 Mine, December 9, 1914.)
Basella, Joe
(Italian Miner, ca.1911, Climax Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 24, married, 2 children.);
(Killed. Instantly killed by a fall of rock in the Climax Mine, June 20, 1911. He fired a shot and immediately went back to work at the coal before resetting some props that had been knocked out.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal while undermining in a pillar workings.  The coal was so loose and free, due to a squeeze on the workings, that he had not been undermining two minutes when it fell on him, in the Climax No. 1 Mine, May 15, 1914.  He died the same day.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal while undermining the face of a room.  He neglected to take down all the loose coal before beginning to undermine it, in the Climax No. 1 Mine, Jan. 13, 1914.)
Serventy, Pete
(Italian Miner, ca.1914, Climax No. 2 Mine, Indiana Co., PA, Age 28, married, 2 children.);
(Killed. Fatally injured by an explosion of blast in the Climax No. 2 Mine, August 6, 1914. Two bottom rock shots had been charged and ignited, and after waiting for some time after the shot had exploded, he went back to see the results. While looking at the bottom the second shot exploded and injured him so badly that he died the same evening.)
