| DESCRIPTION: The town of Humphreys, located on a branch of Sewickley Creek, retains about twenty-five company-built houses. These residences line three streets and are typical of coal company houses found in southwestern Pennsylvania: they are two-story, wood-frame double-houses with clapboard siding, a gable roof, double-hung sash windows, single brick chimneys, and a clay tile foundation. All of the houses have been modified with the addition of asphaltic or aluminum siding over the original wood siding, the enclosure of porches, and the installation of new windows. The company store has been demolished. The coke works is largely demolished with only the remains of two beehive coke ovens standing, ca.1994. They are located along a curve in the road, PA Rt. 130. These two coke ovens have all but been destroyed ca.2000, with the rebuilding of the road aound the cruve. The remains of the tipple and other mining buildings are situated immediately south and on a hillside, overlooking the coal patch on PA Rt. 130, they have been incorporated into farm buildings.
HISTORY: In ca.1917 the Bessemer Coke Company installed a new 12 foot Robinson fan, and built 18 permanent stoppings at the Humphgreys No. 1 Mine. The company also built 12 new coal company owned 4 room houses in Humphreys for the miners. At the Humphreys No. 2 Mine they opened up an air shaft, and built 3 permanent stoppings.
