A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Greensburg No. 1 Mine (Keystone No. 1 Mine) (Haydenville Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Greensburg No. 1 Mine & Coke Works (Haydenville), South Greensburg / Haydenville "Red Onion", Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.  The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..  No coal company records exist or have been found todate.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Killed by flying coal from a shot blast, in the Greensburg No. 1 Mine, May 22, 1906);
(May 23, 1906, Michael Chennic, Austrian, miner, was instantly killed by a blast in the Greensburg No.1 Mine.  He had undercut the coal three feet and drilled the hole for the blast to a dept of 4 1/2 feet, slanting upward to the roof, allowing the powder to be placed in the solid, which caused it to blow out, dislodging only a small amount of coal, a portion of which struck Chennic after he had retreated for safety, about 100 feet on his way to a cut through. John Zehrat, who worked with him, reached the cut through, which was about 30 feet beyond where Chennic was struck, and excaped.);

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  Charles Lum was arrested, charged with taking twenty four pounds of powder and upwards into No. 1 Mine of the Keystone Coal & Coke Company, in Hempfield township, Westmoreland County.  This defendent was arrested, entered a plea of guilty, and was sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars and costs of suit, which were paid.)
