(May 23, 1906, Michael Chennic, Austrian, miner, was instantly killed by
a blast in the Greensburg No.1 Mine. He had undercut the coal three
feet and drilled the hole for the blast to a dept of 4 1/2 feet, slanting
upward to the roof, allowing the powder to be placed in the solid, which
caused it to blow out, dislodging only a small amount of coal, a portion
of which struck Chennic after he had retreated for safety, about 100 feet
on his way to a cut through. John Zehrat, who worked with him, reached the
cut through, which was about 30 feet beyond where Chennic was struck, and
excaped.);
