by an explosion of gas in No. 30 room, pillar off No. 10 entry, east, in
the Jamison No. 3 Mine, that death resulted on the 28th the the same month.
Andrew Zecubican, who worked with him, was also severely burned. They
had drawn their timber and retreated to a place of safety until the roof
fell, after which they returned to the face, when their open lamps ignited
the gas. No gas had ever been discovered on this fall, and an examination
immediately after the explosion failed to detect any, as did also frequent
examinations made thereafter, until the 25th, or four days thereafter, when
gas was discovered for the first time. The gas which exploded had evidently
accumulated higher up on the fall than could be reached by the fire boss
or any others in making their examinations, and after the timber had been
drawn and the roof allowed to fall [which is very essential in successful
pillar work] the gas was forced down to the place where the men were
at work.)
