A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the Wick Haven Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Wick Haven Mine, Wickhaven, Perry Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Leg broken by mine car on entry.  He was riding on the front end of the mine cars and fell off, in the Wick Haven Mine, May 9, 1910.)

(Injured.  Leg broken, which necessitated amputation, by a fall of slate, in the Wick Haven Mine, July 13, 1898.)

(Injured. Hip joint dislocated and a finger cut off by a fall of slate, in the Wick Haven Mine, Aug. 3, 1898.)

Black, Archibald

Bobnko, Steve
(Hungarian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1910, Wick Haven Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 23, single);
(Injured.  Hip bruised and ankle sprained by fall of coal and slate on pillar work, as he was pushing a mine car towards the face, in Wick Haven Mine, March 7, 1910.)
Branthoover, Oliver C.
(American Miner, Fire Boss ca.1907, Wick Haven Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 58, married.);
(Killed.  Overcome by smoke from a mine fire, in the Wick Haven Mine, Nov. 12, 1907.);
(November 12, Oliver C. Branthoover, American Fire Boss, was suffocated in Wick Haven Mine about 3 o'clock A.M. A fire occurred in the mine the evening previous and the mine officials were engaged fighting it when he arrived at the mine to make his regular examination.  He was informed of the fire by the mine foreman and was requested to help fight it.  The officials in charge noticed that it was getting air from a certain entry and decided that a door was open in it and took him along to see if they could close it.  They ventured some distance in the smoke and some of the party thinking it was not safe to proceed any further, stopped.  Branthoover was warned several times to come back, but did not do so and was over come. His body was recovered about three hours afterwards.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Wick Haven Mine, March 9, 1907.);
(March 9, John S. Crawford, American, Mule Driver, according to his statement was squeezed between mine cars which he was turning into a room in the Wick Haven Mine.  He went home from his work March 11 not feeling well.  Several months previous to this he had been doctoring for bladder complaint.  He was taken to a hospital March 20 to be treated and died four days later.  A post mortem examination revealed a ruptured intestine.  The coroner investigated the case and decided he had been injured in the mine.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars on the ipple.  In attempting to set a brake, he was caught between two mine cars.  Outside the Wick Haven Mine, June 6, 1910. Died July 25, 1910.)

(Italian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1913, Wick Haven Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 30, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate at the face of a room, while preparing to set a post.  Right leg crushed below knee and left leg fractured above knee, in the Wick Haven Mine, Feb. 11, 1913.  Died in the hospital.)

(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Wick Haven Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 39, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate, in the Wick Haven Mine, June 26, 1906.)
Kussman, John
(Hungarian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1910,Wick Haven Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 23, single.);
(Killed.  Fatelly burned by a an explosion of gas at face of entry.  He and Mike Todar were loading out the last cut in the entry, which had holed into another entry. When they had the cut sheared through, their open lights came in contact with gas that had accumulated in the entry holed into.  In the Wick Haven Mine, Dec. 29, 1910.  He died January 4, 1911.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate at face of room.  His partner suggested that they that the slate down and proceeded to get the tools, but in the meantime Naggy began to work under it and was caught by the fall, in Wick Haven Mine, Sept. 29, 1908.)
