A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Wheeler Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Wheeler Mine & Coke Works, Wheeler, near Dunbar and Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Superintendent ca.1894, ca.1898, ca.1900, of the Wheeler Mine & Coke Works, Fayette Co., PA., for Cambria Iron Company.)

Ray, John, Jr.
(Miner, ca.1894, Wheeler Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 21, single.);
(Injured.  Hurt internally by being caught on the roof and a loaded mine car, while riding on the mine car, in the Wheeler Mine, Sept. 29, 1894.)
Reid, John W.
(Miner, Fire Boss ca.1898, Wheeler Mine, Fayette Co., PA., Age 48, married, 11 children.);
(John W. Reid, died Feb. 4, 1898, had been sick only a short while with typhoid fever, which is prevalent at Wheeler. He was Fire Boss in the Wheeler mine and was well and favorably known as a man of experience in mining and as one of the most faithful employees of the Cambria Iron Company. He is survived by his widow and eleven children, four of whom are quite young. Services were conducted in his home at Wheeler yesterday by Reverend W. A. Edie, of the Presbyterian Church of this place and interment followed in Hill Grove Cemetery. (The Courier - Connellsville, Pennsylvania Feb. 4,1898)
