Washington Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Washington No. 1, No. 2 & No. 3 Mines & Coke Works, Star Junction, Perry Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Died three hours later.  He had to go about 20 feet on the main haulage before reaching the manway, and knowing the dilly rider always went into this flat befroe running the trip in, he, with others, proceeded without taking any precaution, but on this occasion the dilly rider did not precede his trip, and before they reached the manway the trip caught them and passed over Botchko.)

(December 23, 1905, John Changerly, miner, was instantly killed in Washington No. 2 Mine by a fall of lslate.  He was drawing a room pillar on 8 north heading.  The roof in this heading is not good and no miner is allowed to make a fall unless the fire boss or some other mine official is present.  Changerly was notified by the fire boss not to mine any more coal from the coal pillar left between the skip and the previous fall, until some experienced person was present to assist him in making the fall.)

(February 2, 1905, Loss Kuhn, miner, was fatally burned at Washington No. 2 Mine.  The shot hole was overcharged and not sufficiently tamped.  When the shot was fired, it threw out a cloud of smoke followied by flame that burned Kuhn.  He died fifteen days later.)
