A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Umpire Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Umpire Mine & Coke Works, Umpire, Brownsville, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate.  Died some ten hours after being hurt, in the Umpire Mine, Jan. 16, 1889.);
(William McCoy was fatally injured on the 16th of January in the Umpire mine.  He and a son worked together, but at the time of the accident thay had not commenced their labors for the day.  After they had taken off their over clothes to prepare for work the deceased remarked to the son that the slate was "Working," and while speaking, he picked up a pick and while in the act of sounding the slate a piece of it fell striking him in the face; this was followed by a larger one, which in its descent dislodged a post that was under it; this post is supposed to have struck Mr. McCoy and before he could get out of the way this larger piece fell on him, with the result as stated above.  The accident occurred some 14 yards from the working face of room 10, entry 3.)
