A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Trotter Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Trotter Mine & Coke Works, Trotter, Dunbar Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(November 11, 1905, Peter Caffery, mule driver, was instantly killed at Trotter Mine by falling under a moving trip of loaded mine cars.  He had stopped his trip on a layout to take out his sprags, and in strpping on the forward end of the front mine wagon his foor slipped and he fell under the trip.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof coal, and slate in the Trotter Mine, Oct. 13, 1903.  He knew it was dangerous and set up a post under it before he commenced to work in the morning.  Then he gebun to work on one side of the stump, and his partner on the other.  In mining  the coal he struck the post and knocked it out, and so much roof coal fell on him that his partner could not pull him out before the slae fell on him. He died 10 days after the accident.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured.  Caught between mine cars on a sidetrack when the bumper of one of the mine cars rode over the bumper on the next mine car, in the Trotter Mine, Aug. 18, 1913.);
(His tombstone reads: Rocco DiConza, born 1898, died 1913.);
(Rumor has it, in the DeConza family that his death was not an accident. The family still believes that Rocco was asked to join the UMW union and decided against it. The resulting so called "accident" came not too long after. );

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Trotter Mine, July 29, 1903.  He died the following day.  He was in another room holding a light for the miner who was pulling down slate.  He stood so near that the slate fell on him,  This was due to extreme ignorance.)

Stirone, Francesco
(Italian Miner, Pisk Miner ca.1911, Trotter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 35, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Francesco Stirone, died in the horrific explosion and fire in nearby Connellsville, Pa., that killed five and injured 26 on January 12, 1911. Stirone was looking at postcards in McCrorey's 5&10 cent store when an open gas line ignited. Stirone carried one young girl clerk to safety, then went back into the store to rescue others. The store then collapsed. Connellsville's newspaper praised his selfless actions on its front page, and hundreds attended Stirone's funeral. He was survived by his wife and four young children.)
