A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Royal Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Royal Mine & Coke Works, Royal, Chestnut Ridge, Redstone Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Killed by a mine car while riding on th efront end of an entry trip as it was being pushed along a face entry the trip unexpectedly turned into a but entry and he was squeezed against a trap door in the mouth of the butt entry, in the Royal Mine, Oct. 25, 1916.)

(Lithuanian Miner, Mule Driver ca.1916, Royal Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Injured.  Chest squeezed and lung punctured by a broken rib.  He attempted to get off the front end of a mine car going rapidly down grade and was caught between the mine car and rib side, in the Royal Mine, Aug. 26, 1916.)

(Injured.  Leg fractured and hip dislocated by a fall of slate at the face of a room, in the Royal Mine, Aug. 25, 1917.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by being thrown off of a mine car on an entry, in the Royal Mine, Sept. 9, 1913.)

(Injured.  Thigh fractured by a fall of slate on an entry, in the Royal Mine, July 16, 1917.)

(Austrian Miner, Company Man ca.1913, Royal Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 36, single.);
(Injured.  Back injured by a piece of concrete falling on him, in the Royal Mine, May 20, 1913.)
Cregg, John
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1912, Royal Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 29, single.);
(Injured.  Rib broken by a fall of slate on an entry, in the Royal Mine, Dec. 8, 1912.)
Custianta, Melia
(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1914, Royal Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 25, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by mine cars near the face of a room.  The car started when a block was accidently knocked from under the wheel and in trying to stop the car he was thrown under it, in the Royal Mine, April 4, 1914.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught in the machinery while putting tar on the belt.  Outside the Royal Mine, June 27, 1912.  Died in a few minutes.)
