| DESCRIPTION: Republic, coal company patch town The coal company patch town of Republic, the eastern portion of which today makes up the larger town of Republic. There are approximately 100 coal company houses remaining, which is probably the majority of the original coal company housing. The houses are located directly north of the former Republic Mine & Coke Works, all the housing in the coal patch town of Republic is the two-story, wood frame semi-detached type of company house, the vast majority of which are front gabled. These house are four-bay with front and rear shed-roof porches and two interior brick chimneys. Along just one of Republic's ten parallel streets, located at the southern end of town there are gable-ended semi-detached houses. The Republic Iron & Steel Company Coal Company Store is at the south end of town. It was in good condition ca.1990, and being used as a hotel. The red brick building is two stories high, rectangular in plan and has a gable roof with a modern false front. The main facade has three bays, and the second floor windows are arched with double voussoirs and white stone keustones and end blocks. |
