A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Plummer Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Plummer Mine, near Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(German Miner, Pick Miner ca.1894, Plummer Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 30, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of mine roof, after the first roof fall he disregarded the mine boss and continued to draw a rib, in the Plummer Mine, Oct. 3, 1894.  Lived on "Nigger" Hill.  Interred in Hill Grove Cemetery.  [from the "Connellsville Courier," Oct. 5, 1894.].)

(Miner, Mine Foreman ca.1898, Plummer Mine, Fayette Co., PA.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate in a crosscut, while loading a mine car, in the Plummer Mine, Sept. 4, 1916.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof in room No. 38 on No. 2 butt whilst slabbing the side of a rib, in the Plummer Mine, Mar. 11, 1889.)

(Miner, Fireboss ca.1887, Plummer Mine, Fayette Co., PA.)

Hiles, Josiah, Sr.
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1917, Laborer, Plummer Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 32, married, 4 children);
(Killed.  He died during a friendly wrestling match with his boss. In between a "trip" him and others would wrestle. He was thrown and his head struck on the edge of a bench. He died from a broken neck, April 30, 1917. He was 32 years old, and was survived by his wife and four children. His wife, however, was carrying twins at the time of his death.  [from "Uniontown Morning Herald," April, 1917.)
