A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Plumer Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Plumer Mine & Coke Works,  McClellandtown, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Plumer Mine, July 11, 1913.)

(Italian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1916, Plumer Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 35, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate in crosscut while loadig a mine car with coal, in the Plumer Mine, Sept. 4, 1916.)

Hiles, Josiah, Sr.
(Miner, Laborer, Plumer Works, Fayette Co., PA, Age 32, married, wife Daisy Minerd Hiles, 3 children.);
(Killed. He died during a friendly wrestling match with his boss. In between a "trip" him and others would wrestle. He was thrown and his head struck on the edge of a bench. He died from a broken neck. His wife however was carrying twins at the time of his death.);
(born Jan 20, 1885 - d. ca.1917 and had a twin brother, David.);
(From the "Uniontown Morning Herald"... met a tragic death Saturday during a friendly wrestling bout with E.W. Eberly, superintendent of the plant. Mr. Eberly, Mr. Hiles and several other employes had gone to the mine to repair a motor. During the interval while a "trip" was being made, Mr. Hiles and Mr. Eberly engaged in a friendly wrestling bout as they had done dozens of times before. Mr. Eberly finally threw Mr. Hiles, both men falling at the same time. Mr. Hiles' head, however, struck on the edge of a bench which had been nearby but thought out of danger. Death resulted from a broken neck. Mr. Hiles is survived by his widow and four children. He was one of the most popular men at the plant.);
(Josiah Hiles, Sr. was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in Dunbar.)
