A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Percy Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Percy Mine & Coke Works, Percy, Menallen Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

Harris, John
(Miner Boy, Laborer ca.1889, Percy Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 13);
(Killed.  Fatally injured while playing about the coke ovens; he had been warned by the charger to keep away from the coke ovens, but unknown to him the boy had jumped on the hind end of the larry to take a ride (while the charger was in front) and before the larry stopped the boy jumped off in order that the charger would not find him riding and in doing unknowingly jumped into the tunnel head or opening in top of one of the coke ovens;  the boy was taken out immediately but his burns were so severe that he died in about nine days, outside the Percy Mine, March 28, 1889.)
Hawk, David
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Percy Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 38, married, 3children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Percy Mine, July 2, 1900.);
(David Hawk was killed by a second fall of slate while trying to save his brother, who was caught by the first fall of slate.)

(David Hawk lived in Yaugertown Hollow, Fayette Co., PA.)

Hawk, Peter
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Percy Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 51, married.);
(Injured.  Seriously injured, brusied about the head and body, by a fall of slate on hauling road, in the Percy Mine, July 2, 1900.);
(The slate fall killed two of his brothers.);
(Peter Hawk lived in Lemont Furnace, PA.)

(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Percy Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 40, married, 4 childen.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, while robbing a stump, in the Percy Mine, July 2, 1900.  Died one half hour later.);
(b. September 01, 1860 - d. July 2, 1900.);
(David Hawk was also killed trying to save his brother.);
