A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Paul Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Paul Mine & Coke Works, Paul, Dickerson Run, near Vanderbilt, Paul, Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Killed by a fall of roof at the face of a pillar.  The place fell suddenly while Baker was working and Shallenberger was examining it as the fire boss, in the Paul Mine, March 31, 1914.)

(Killed.  Killed on the top of the coke ovens.  He was riding on a larry, contrary to the rules of the company, when an axle broke, causing the larry to jump the track and topple over on him, Outside the Paul Mine, July 30, 1913.)

(American Miner Boy, Pick Miner ca.1905, Paul Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 18, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate, in the Paul Mine, May 26, 1905.);
(May 20, 1905, Peter Gallagher, miner, was instantly killed at the Paul Mine by a fall of slate in a narrow room in the slope pillars.  He, in company with his father, was loading a mine car when the draw slate fell without any warning.  The place was properly timbered on the one side and had been examined by both men and was considered safe.  A slip was running parallel with the side of the room, but was concealed by the coal on the side of the pillar, thus leaving no support except that resting on the coal.)

(Killed.  While drawing out mine posts the roof fell on him, killing him instantly, in the Paul Mine, May 11, 1900.)

(Robert Nelson was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in 1855. After working in the coal mines of county Durham, England, he immigrated to the USA in 1881.  He became an American citizen in 1888 and died in New Eagle, PA in 1925.)

Tyler, John S.
(American Miner, Mule Driver ca.1905, Paul Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 36, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars, in the Paul Mine, Oct. 25, 1905.);
(October 25, 1905, John S. Tyler, mule driver, was fatally injured at the Paul Mine.  Tyler and the trip runner were waiting for an empty trip of mine cars to run in on the lay-out.  The front car left the track at the junction of the loaded and empty tracks.  Tyler was standing between the tracks near this point and was struck by the front mine wagon.  He died two hours later.)

(Slavonian Miner, Mule Driver ca.1905, Paul Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 37, married, 4 children.);
(Kiled.  Fatally injured by being crushed between a mine car and a mine post, in the Paul Mine, July 21, 1905.);
(July 21,  1905, George Veable, mule driver, was fatally injured at the Paul Mine by being crushed between a loaded mine car and a small post that was holding an air door open.  He was riding on the front end of the mine wagon coming up a heavy grade, and was leaning over the side, forgetting the position of the post.  He died the same day.)
