A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Painter Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Painter Mine & Coke Works, McClure Station, Painter, Upper Tyrone Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Adams, Randal
(Miner, ca.1903, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA.)

Bellish, Bassel
(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 43, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of slate, in the Painter Mine, Aug. 7, 1905.  He and his son were working on a rib.  He fired a shot, and, without waiting for the smoke to clear away or to examine the roof, he began cleaning the track. The slate jarred loose by the shot fell on him.  He died a few minutes after the slate was removed from him.)

(Injured.  Fifth finger of right hand caught between wheel of mine car and a piece of iron rail.  Finger had to be amputated.  Outside the Painter Mine, Sept. 26, 1916.)

(Injured.  Arm bruised by falling Slate, in the Painter Mine, June 8, 1904.)
Clark, Norman
(American Miner, Laborer ca.1916, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 23, married.);
(Injured.  Eye injured.  He stopped and his face came in contact with a pick in the hands of his partner, on the main entry, in the Painter Mine, May 5, 1916.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by fall of slate, in the Painter Mine, Sept. 5, 1906);
(Sept. 5, 1906, Edward Debold, American, miner, was instantly killed at the Painter Mine by a fall of slate, while loadimng a car of coal.  From the conversation Debold has with a driver a short time prior to the accident, it seems that Debold realized to some extent that the slate was in a dangerous condition, but was trying to finish loading the car before securing the slate.)

(Injured.  Collar bone fractured and head injured by mine cars, in the Painter Mine, Jan. 1, 1903.)

(Injured.  Hands burned by gasoline fire, in the Painter Mine, Feb. 7, 1905.)

(Injured.  Finger and rib broken by a piece of falling slate at the face of the working place, in the Painter Mine, Oct. 5, 1907.)
Lynch, James
(Superintendent, ca.1912, ca.1913, of the Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, for H.C. Frick Coke Company, Scottdale, PA.)

Maslack, Mathew
(Austrian Miner Boy, Coal Loader ca.1903, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 19, single.);
(Killed.  Killed.  Killed instantly by falling roof, in the Painter Mine, June 24, 1903.);
(July 24, Painter Mine, Mathew Maslack, miner, was killed instantly.  He was employed drawing stumps in company with Randal Adams, who was present at the time.  Maslack had placed two posts in th4e old roadway at the end of the mine car.  The roof had been very solid, and they had mined two mine cars from the stumps on either side and had not placed any posts, thus leaving a space of twelve feet without support, over which traversed a very large horseback slip, which caused the roof to fall.  Maslack was caught.)

(Injured.  Eyes and face injured by a dynamite blast, in the Painter Mine, March 1, 1904.)
Moleski, Joseph
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 33, married.);
(Injured.  Shoulder and ribs fractured; by a fall of slatre, in the Painter Mine, April 27, 1901.)
Murawski, Teofil
(Polish Miner Boy, Assistant Trip Runner ca.1903, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 18, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally Injured by mine cars, in the Painter Mine, June 1, 1903.);
(June 1, Painter Mine, Teofil Murawski, assistant trip runner, was injured fatally.  He was engaged uncoupling the head line from the dilly trip of loaded mine cars when it was approaching the landing outside.  His foot slipped and falling his legs went under the mine cars, but he held on to the head line.  The engineer attempted to stop the trip quickly, when the tail line broke, and the trip continued.  In some manner Murawski's leg got upon the rail and was caught by the wheels, throwing the front mine car from the track, which came down upon his body.  He died seven hours later.)

(Superintendent, ca.1917, of the Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, for Newcomer Coke Company.)

(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 47, married.);
(Injured.  Back injured by fall of slate, in the Painter Mine, Dec. 21, 1905.)

Sargot, Michael
(American Miner Boy, Coal Loader ca.1898, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 19, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof, in the Painter Mine, Oct. 4, 1898.);
(Michael Sargot, American, Miner, was instantly killed by a fall of slate in Painter Mine on Oct. 4, 1898.  He and another man named R. F. Willtoup were taking out a pillar and to make a fall, commenced to draw out the posts and when they had drawn all of them but one, they knew it was not safe to knock it out, but in spite of advice of Willtoup, Sargot said he could take it out, and in doing so the roof fell on him, as above stated.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by fall of slate, in the Painter Mine, Dec. 23, 1905.)
Shultz, Alexander
(American Miner Boy, Coal Loader ca.1903, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 19, single.);
(Killed.  He was killed instantly, by a roof fall, in South West No. 1 "A" Mine, January 2, 1903.);
(He was employed drawing a rib, in company with John Repko and Kaiser Levetska, who were present when the accident occured. The latter had examined the roof and instructed Shultz to place some posts to support it. He replied that he would do so as soon as he had completed loading his car, at which he continued to work, and before he had finished loading the car the roof fell and caught him.)

(Injured.  Injured by fall of coal and slate, in the Painter Mine, June 23, 1902.)

Wagar, Samuel
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Painter Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Killed.  Samuel Wagar was instantly killed at Painter Mine by a fall of coal.  He had fired a blast in the coal to break it down.  The blast failed to throw the coal and Wagar sat down to extend the mining without setting sprags under coal, April 17, 1905.)
