A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Oliver Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Oliver Mines & Coke Works, Oliver No.1, Oliver No. 2, Oliver No. 3, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(June 2, 1906, Joseph Hartman, German, foreman, Oliver No. 2 Mine, was fatally crushed by loaded mine car.  Two loaded cars were standing on butt heading some distance apart, and in order to assist the driver he removed the sprags from the upper car, placed his back against it to lower it down to the other car, and slipped and fell, the car runniing over him and crushing him so badly that he died two hours later.)

(Thomas Jones, 17 years old, was employed as a laborer at Oliver No. 3.  He and Henry Enfield, another employe, had brought a horse to the surface and while removing the box from the hoisting cage Thomas Jones slipped and fell down the shafe, a distance of about 360 feet, striking the top of the other cage and meeting instant death.)

(MOONSHINER JOE SEGOSKEY - The first liquor parole in the county was revoked today following the arrest of Joe Segoskey of Oliver No. 2 when a still was found in operation in the cellar of his home. The man had been sentenced to pay a fine of $200 and serve seven months in the workhouse but was given a year and a half parole on a charge of violating the liquor law.  [from the "The Daily Courier," Connellsville, PA, Tuesday May 23, 1922.].)

(Feb. 19, 1906, Mike Setlock, Austrian, laborer, Oliver No. 2 Mine, while walking along track, was struck by a trip of empty cars that was being lowered in on layoff, and so serverely injured that he died about two hourslater.  He made no attempt to avoid the danger, although there was a space of four feet between the car and the rib.)
