A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Nellie Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Nellie Mines & Coke Works, Nellie, Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured. Arm broken. He slipped upon a piece of iron rail on an entry, in the Nellie Mine, Aug. 1, 1913.)
Bolack, John
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 30, single.);
(Injured.  Leg broken while drawing out mine posts in rib working, in the Nellie Mine, Jan. 19, 1898.)

(Superintendent, ca.1917, of the Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, for Reilly Callaghan Coal & Coke Company.)
Cherry, Joseph
(Russian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 43, married, 5 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a blast that he though had missed fired, in the Nellie Mine, Jan. 3, 1905.);
(He died fifteen days later.)

(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 28, single.);
(Injured.  One finger cut off while lifting a loaded mine wagon, in the Nellie Mine, Nov. 12, 1900.)

Dagota, Elmer
(Hungarian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 26, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of coal, in the Nellie Mine, July 5, 1901.  This was the first fall he had in taking back the pillar, and he was taking out the posts and had nearly all out;  he was warned of the danger, but did not heed the warning.)
Danage, John
(Russian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Nellie Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 25, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate & roof coal, in the Nellie Mine, July 26, 1905.);
(July 26, 1905, John Danage, miner, was killed at the Nellie Mine by a fall of roof in pillar workings.  It seems the victim had taken out all the posts in order to let the roof fall, and in order to hasten matters he went back into the skip and cut a small coal pillar that had been left to hold back the previous fall.  While engaged in cutting the small coal stump that had been left standing, the roof fell in on him.)

(Killed.  Ran over by a trip of mine wagons, in Cochran's Nellie Mine, May 28, 1890. He died the next day.  [from the "Connellsville Courier," May 30, 1890.].)

(Injured. Foot bruised by a trip passing over it, in the Nellie Mine, Dec. 4, 1900.)

(Miner, ca.1922, Nellie Drift Mine, Fayette Co., PA, married.);
(Killed.  Died due to accidental internal injuries due to a fall of slate, in the Nellie Mine, Reilly-Callaghan Coal and Coke Company. Anthony died February 11, 1922. He was born in Sucha Hora, Czechoslovakia.)
