(Killed.  Along with Mich Micloska.  Both of these men were killed by the foolhardy act of one of them jumping on the cage after it was under headway and fully two feet from the bottom, it seems that the jumpers' pick caught on the shaft timbers and that pulled him back, then the other man either lost his life by trying to rescue his fellow miner, or else became so excited that he lost his presence of mind and fell down between the cage and shaft:  the cage started up the shaft with the full compliment of ten men, the jumper making eleven, which is against the rules of the mine, as only ten are allowed to ride at any one hoisting; I examined and questioned several of the ten men  but could get no clear account of the accident.  The men being all panic stricken at that time, and they could not tell nothing beyond tha fact that the cage left the bottom with ten men on it, another jumped on while it was in motion and two of their number fell over and were crushed between the cage and buntons, being instantly killed.  In the Monarch Mine, Sept. 24, 1889.);
