| Ruins of one of the many bee-hive coke ovens
near the Ranch Road area of Dunbar. These coke ovens were part of the Mahoning
Mine & Coke Works which operated from ca.1872 until at least ca.1903.
In ca.1903 the Mahoning Mine was combined through underground entries with
the Atlas Mine. The Mahoning Coke Works exist, although overgrown, setting
in various states of disrepair. There were 100 bee-hive coke ovens at the
Mahoning Mine. Attempts have been made to preserve them but they are scheduled
to be bulldozed sometime in the future. (Photo courtesy of the Coal & Coke Heritage Center, Penn State University Fayette Campus, Uniontown, PA) |
