No. 4 and 5 butts, in Leith Shaft Mine, June 17, 1889, from which he died
June 23, 1889, at 4 o'clock P.M.; from what I could learn at the time
of my investigation of the above accident. It seems that there had
been a very heavy fall of roof coal and slate in the main heading of the
fourth section north, and Mr., Whyel had sent two of the day men toooo clean
up that fall, and while they were working he came to see how they were getting
along; a few minutes after Mr. Whyel's arrival they all sat down on
the side of the heading a short distance away from the fall and talked over
the situation, and while so engaged a fresh fall occurred, with the result
above named. I questioned those men very closely, and found that they
had not sounded the roof above the place Mr. Whyel sat, giving as an excuse
for their negligence that they were away from the broken roof and did not
think it necessary to sound that part, as it appeared to be all right.);
