A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Juniata Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Juniata Mine & Coke Works, Juniata, Dunbar Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  January 1, 1912:  Samuel Ansman, miner at Juniata mine of H.C. Frick Coke Company.  Charge:  Damaging a safety lamp in a mine worked exclusively with locked safety lamps.  Warrent issued, but defendant avoided arrest.)

(Injured.  Foot and arm broken by falling down mine shaft.  He was helping to retimber the mine shaft.  The bunton gave way and he fell down the mine shaft, in the Juniata Mine, Nov. 23, 1916.  William C. (Charles Kennedy moved to southwestern Pennsylvania from southwestern Virginia, ca.1900.  He was related to William C. Dowe.)

(Injured.  Arthur Madison, was trapped in a cave-in and was rescued by another miner. He would have died if it weren't for this man, Henry Rittenberger; he survived with 2 broken legs and had to quit the H.C. Frick Baseball League that the mines had in the area. He was being scouted by a professional team, however, the injury made playing baseball impossible.)
