A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Grace Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Grace Mine & Coke Works, Grace, near Moyer, Bullskin Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Injured.  Had two ribs fractured by being caught between the mine wagon and a rib in his room, in the Grace Mine, Nov. 26, 1886.)
Betuary, Walter
(Miner, ca.1909, Grace Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Prosecuted for violations of the Mining Laws: 1909.  August 23, information was made against John Nicholas and Walter Betuary for burning impure illuminating oil in the Grace Mine of W. J. Rainey.  Defendants entered a plea of guilty and were ordered to pay costs of prosecution.)

Layman, Joseph
(Miner, Carpenter ca.1886, Grace Mine, Moyer, Fayette Co., PA, Age 31, married.);
(Killed.  This accident was caused by the falling of a part of a trestle building, on which he and another person stood, carrying them to the ground.  In the fall his skull was fractured amd he was otherwise injured.  He lived buta few days after it occurred.  Outside the Grace Mine, Nov. 20, 1886.)

(Injured.  Hands and arms badly burned by powder exploding by a spark from his lamp, in the Grace Mine, April 12, 1898.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Grace Mine, April 28, 1906.);
(April 28, 1906, Charles Marton, Swedish, miner, was instantly killed at the Grace Mine by a piece of slate that fell off the side of the pillar.  This accident was due to carelessness or recklessness on the part of the victim, as the crushed condition of the slate at this point fully warranted its being taken down prior to his loading coal.)

(Injured. Leg broken by fall of coal & slate, in the Grace Mine, Dec. 20, 1905.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Grace Mine, Sept. 28, 1906.);
(Sept. 28, 1906, George Mervis, Russian, miner, was instantly killed at the Grace Mine by a fall of slate.  The pillar in which this accident occurred was not in operation, and there was no evidence to show what Mervis was doing.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by falling roof, in the Grace Mine, July 29, 1903.);
(July 29, Grace mine, John Palish, miner, was killed instantly.  He was employed drawing a rib in company with John Platsko, who was present at the time and was holding the lights, while Palish was engaged drawing the posts for the purpose of causing a fall of roof, and when it was about to break Palish started to run out, and ran up against the posts of the break row.  He fell and was caught by the falling roof before he could regain his feet.)
Patsco, Mike
(Slavish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Grace Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 23, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by roof falling on him, while knocking out mine posts, in the Grace Mine, Mar. 2, 1898.);
(Mike Patsco, Slavish Miner, was instantly killed by a fall of roof in the Grace Mine, March 2, 1898, on Bo. 7 Burr.  This accident occurred by taking unnecessary risks in knocking out posts on ribs.  The distance from the face to the last post was over 20 feet and in knocking out the fourth one they nearly all fell suddenly, covering him.  This was about one o'clock, afternoon, when the men who were working in adjoining rooms and ribs who were also Slavish, saw what happened, they all ran out of the mine and told the mine foreman;  he went inside took the road men with him and cleaned the fall off to get his body out, and it took them over two hours to do it.) ;

Popovrsha, Steve
(Slavonian Miner Boy, Pick Miner ca.1901, Grace Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 18, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a blown out shot, by powder exploding while putting a cartridge in a shot hole, in the Grace Mine, Oct. 26, 1901.  This accident happened by his not making a proper cartridge;  he was putting iy in a drill hole when it burst, and having his open light near, some of the powder fell on it, causing it to exp0lode the whole cartridge.  He died the next day.);

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate at the face of a pillar.  He neglected to post his place, in the Grace Mine, March 1, 1913.)

(Injured.  Slipped on a piece of slate and sprained his ankle, in the Grace Mine, Oct. 9, 1889.)

(General Superintendent, ca.1912, W. J. Rainey Company, Uniontown, PA, Grace Mine, Fayette Co., PA.)
Swink, Edward
(Miner Boy, Trapper Boy ca.1895, Grace Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 14.);
(Killed. Edward Swink, son of James Swink of near Moyer, was killed in the Moyer Mine on Saturday. Edward was a trapper in the mine on No. 7 flat heading and when the entry trip ran in there he did not notice it and he was caught between the wagons and the rib. He was about 14 years old. [from "The Standard", Oct. 28, 1895, Uniontown, PA.].);
(Edward Swink, a trapper in W. J. Rainey’s Grace mine at Moyer, was caught in a trip of cars, Saturday afternoon, and instantly killed. He had left his post and gone into another part of the mine, with which he was not familiar, and as he was going around a curve he was struck by a loaded trip and rolled a considerable distance under the cars. He was horribly mangled. Swink was 14 years old and, a son of James Swink of Moyer. Swink had not been employed in the mine long. His father is a miner at Moyer. (Killed.  Killed by a fall of slate and roof coal in his own room, in the Grace Mine, Oct. 24, 1889, the result of his failure to post the room properly, after having been warned by several, including the mine boss; the mine boss stated to me that on the morning of the day of the accident he asked Zegling why he did not post his room and the man said he had no axe, so the mine boss borrowed one for him, still posts were never set; further comment is unnecessary.)
