A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Gilmore Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Gilmore Mines & Coke Works, Gilmore / Smithfield, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Kneecap badly cut by an axe while making timber.  Outside the Gilmore No. 1 Mine, July 21, 1917.)

Cetako, Mike
(Russian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Gilmore Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 24, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed.  Head crushed by a fall of roof coal and slate, in the Gilmore Mine, Oct. 8, 1906.);
(Oct. 8, 1906, Mike Cetako, Russian, Miner, Glimore Mine, had his head crushed by a  fall of roof coal and slate, while trying to pry some slate down that was hanging loose over the haulage road.  Had he used good judgement, the accident could have been avoided.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed while trying to put an empty mine car on the track on an entry.  It is supposed that the horse started while he was lifting the mine car, in the Gilmore No. 1 Mine, Aug. 7, 1912.)
