HISTORY:
Franklin Mine & Coke Works
From the Report of the Inspectors of Mines, 1889:
Franklin Mine.  Located on the Mt. Pleasant Branch of the B. & O. R. R., at Owensdale, PA.  Owners, B. F. Keister & Co..  Drift opening .  Ventilated by furnace and worked under the single-entry system.  This mine is well drained and throughly ventilated and its general condition is unusually good in spite of its single entries;  however, the evil efforts of that system will not be felt until the pillars are to be drawn from the back end of the property.
(Inspectors of Mines of Pennsylvania,1890:360)

From the "Latrobe Bulletin," ca.1910.
A new opening of the Franklin plant of the B. F. Keister & Company interests is being made on the Stauffer Farm.  This coal will not be used for coking, but will be mined as custom coal.
