A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Fort Hill Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Fort Hill Mine & Coke Works, Fort Hill, Dawson, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Injured.  Head bruised by being caught between the mine dcars, caused by careless driving, in the Fort Hill Mine, April 16, 1886.)
Blowish, Anthony
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Fort Hill Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 40, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of roof, in the Fort Hill Mine, Sept. 5, 1906.)

(Injured.  Collar bone broken and otherwise injured by mine cars, in the Fort Hill Mine, Feb. 4, 1904.)
Mickes, George
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Fort Hill Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 21, single.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by being caught between an empty mine wagon and a rib, in the Fort Hill Mine, Feb. 25, 1898.);
(George Mickes came by his death at Fort Hill Mine on Feb. 25, 1898, by being caught by an empty mine wagon on No. 5 flat.  It was the last trip and they expected to load their mine wagons quickly and go home, so they were out in the entry when the empty trip was coming.  George was in a man hole, and hearing the wagon coming prepared to put in a sprag, but the front wagon got off the track before it reach where he was standing, and ran towards him and caught him between the rib, fracturing his skull;  he never regained consciousness;  he died next day, 24 hours after the accident.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof, in the Fort Hill Mine, Feb. 9, 1901.  He and his partner were just commencing to knock out the posts when it fell on him.  There was no one near but his partner who had to run out of the mine for the mine foreman, and it was some time before he could get enough men to go in the mine, when they found his body.)
