A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Florence Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Florence Mine & Coke Works, Vance Mill, Menallen Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Injured.  Leg fractured by a fall of coal at the face of a room, in the Florence Mine, June 11, 1914.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a truck that he and three other men were dropping down to the tipple.  Outside Florence Mine, March 5, 1914.)

(Injured.  Two fingers and thumb blown off by explosion of blast at face of an entry, in the Florence Mine, March 21, 1914.)

Griffin, Fred
(Miner, ca.1918, Florence Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Fred Griffin of Florence mines is charged with the killing of Wade P. Herod on the night of   November 10, 1918. The trouble is alleged to have started over a poker   game staged in a pig pen. Herod, a friend of Griffin and a sectator, was killed when Griffin attemptd to shoot another man in a dispute over a quarter.[from the Daily Courier, Feb. 20, 1919].)

(Killed.  Fred Griffin of Florence mines is charged with the killing of Wade P. Herod on the night of   November 10, 1918. (Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate at the face of a room while drilling a hole in the roof, in the Florence Mine, May 19, 1917.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of roof coal and slate, in the Florence Mine, Sept. 8, 1906.);
(Sept. 8, 1906, Mike Musup, Slavonian, miner, Florence Mine, was killed by a fall of coal and slate.  He had started to cut a rib over when the fall occurred.  Had he used good judgement the accident would not have happened.)
