A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Elm Grove Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Elm Grove Mine & Coke Works, Elm Grove, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Injured.  Broken leg.  Horse slipped on a rail and fell on him, in the Elm Grove Mine, Sept. 19, 1898.)

Barbill, John
(Miner, ca.1891, Elm Grove Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 38, single.);
(Killed.  Killed Aug. 31, 1891 at W .T.  Rainey's New Elm Grove works, sent amine car out of the mine but the brake was not adjusted correctly, chain broke and the mine car came backwards and ran him over. He resided in Franklin Township, Fayette Co., PA.  [from the "Connellsville Courier, " Sept. 3, 1891.].).

(Injured.  Knee dislocated and face injured by a shot near the face of an entry, in the Elm Grove Mine, April 18, 1916.)
Kelnar, Jake
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1898, Elm Grove Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 38, married, 2 children.);
(Killed.  Squeezed between mine wagon and corner of rib:  He was standing on the side of the track to allow the mine cars to pass when the horse turned off and pulled a car off track, crushing the deceased about the breast and ribs so that he lived only a few minutes, in the Elm Grove Mine, Dec. 12, 1898.)
Kesock, Frank
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Elm Grove Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 30, married, 4 children.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof, in the Elm Grove Mine, May 31, 1901.);
(Mike Lishco was also killed in the same roof fall.)
Kuchner, Andy
(Miner, ca.1919, Elm Grove, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Andy Kuchner of Elm Grove is alleged to have struck Adam Schilsky over the head with a blunt instrument during a brawl, inflicting a mortal skull wound. The assault occurred on November 18, 1919. [from "The Daily Courier," Connellsville, PA, Thursday, February 20, 1919.])

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof while taking out stumps, in the Elm Grove Mine, May 31, 1901.  He and Frank Kosach were working together and they went back to take out a stump, in order to make a fall, and had struck it only a few times when the whole roof fell on them killing them instantly.);
(Frank Kesock was also killed in the same roof fall.)
