A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Chamouni Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Chamouni Mine & Coke Works, Brownsville, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite coal mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous coal mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of roof at the face of the working place.  After he had taken out a stump of coal and finished loading his last mine car he sat down to rest under the roof, when it fell on him, in the Chamouni Mine, June 19, 1909.)

Breshno, John
(Miner, Machine scraper ca.1910, Chamouni Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws, January, 1910:  George Papash and John Breshno, machine runner and scraper at the Chamouni Mine, were charged with passing the main danger station into the mine before it had been examined and reported to be safe by the fire bosses.  At a hearing in the Squire's office, the case was dismissed on account of insufficient evidence, the defendants paying the costs.)

Mills, a mine foreeman at the Chamouni Mine, was charged with not provising proper shelter holes and check doors, and permitting to many employees in one air current.  He entered a plea of guilty and the sentence was suspended by the payment of the costs.  January, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Chamouni Mine, Feb. 14, 1901.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Chamouni Mine, July 23, 1900.  The deceased and John Majuriah worked together in entry 19.  They had 14 feet of slate up, previous to the accident, and concluded to take it down and for this purpose they drilled a hole in it, but before putting the powder in the hole the deceased commenced to throw some coal back from under the slate and while thus engaged it fell.)
