A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Beal Mine

Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Beal Mine, Revere, Menallen Twp., Fayette Co., PA. The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years. Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Abbott, Henry Phillips
(Miner, Superintendent ca.1917, of the Beal Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 44, married, 1 child.);
(Killed. Instantly killed by walking into an exploding charge of mine powder, in the Beal Mine, Sept. 12, 1917. Abbott along with Edward Barnharthad placed a charge in one of the workings and had retired to await the explosion. A similar charge nearby went off, and the two men returned to the spot in the belief that their explosive had been fired. They were within a foot of the charge when it let go. Mr. Abbott had been employed as superintendent of the plant less than one month. He was formerly mine foreman for the Eclipse mine. Interred at the Roscoe, PA Cemetery. Barnhart, Edward
(Miner, ca.1917, Beal Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Injured. Barnhart was thrown a considerable distance and his legs were crushed, in the Beal Mine, Sept. 12, 1917. Barnhart along with Henry Abbott had placed a charge in one of the workings and had retired to await the explosion. A similar charge nearby went off, and the two men returned to the spot in the belief that their explosive had been fired. They were within a foot of the charge when it let go. Lived in Uledi, PA. [from the "Daily News Standard," Sept. 13, 1917.].)
