A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Atlas Mine & Coke Works (Colvin Mine & Coke Works)


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Atlas Mine & Coke Works (Colvin Mine & Coke Works), Dunbar, Atlas, Dunbar Twp., Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Kiled.  Killed by a fall of slate & roof coal, in the Atlas Mine, July 26, 1905.);
(July 26, Phillip Roddia, miner, was killed in Atlas Mine while engaged in mining coal in pillar workings.  A piece of roof coal and slate fell between the posts that had been set for protection.)

(Injured.  Burned by natural gas fire at the boilers, in the Atlas Mine, Dec. 4, 1889.)
Smith, Joseph
(German Miner, Pick Miner ca.1901, Atlas Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 34, married, 3 children.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by a fall of coal, roof & slate, in the Atlas Mine, March 12, 1901.  He commenced to knock out posts for the purpose of making a fall but was caught by part of it.  He died the next day.)
