A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Alice Mine & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Alice Mine & Coke Works, Fayette Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Killed.  Instantly killed by fall of slate at face of his entry.  A "Slick Top" roof at this point prevented tyhe appearance of slips in the slate, and he neglected to sound the roof, in the Alice Mine, March 14, 1910.)

(Injured.  Leg broken by fall of slate on pillar work while undermining the coal, in the Alice Mine, Feb. 24, 1910.)

(Brother of William Ferguson, who was killed in the Alice Mine, ca.1900.)
Ferguson, William
(Scotch Miner, Pick Miner ca.1900, Alice Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 22, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Alice Mine, July 3, 1900.  The deceased and his brother were working together and previous to the accident had fired a middle shot and loaded some sixty bushels out of it.  The brother informed the inspector that he could not get a post under the slate owing to its being flush with the face of the room.  They sounded the slate a few minutes before it fell and considered it safe.)

(Slavonian Miner, Company Man ca.1910, Alice Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 21, single.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being electrocuted onthe main haulage road.  While sitting on top of motor, which stopped directly under a timber that had two electric wires carrying 500 volts fastened along its side, his head came in contact with the wires, in the Alice Mine, Dec. 9, 1910.)

Gollick, Howard
(Miner, ca.1912, Alice Mine, Fayette Co., PA.);
(Injured. Howard Gollick was taken to the Memorial Hospital, Monongahela, Thursday as the result of an accident in which his legs were crushed while at work in the Alice Mine. While the injury is very painful it is not thought that amputation will be necessary. [from the "Roscoe Ledger," August 9,1912.])

(Killed.  Instantly killed by mine car.  He was putting a derailed mine car on the track on the main haulage road.  The mine car was pulled against the rib when the motor tightened up on the trip, and he was crushed between the mine car and the rib, in the Alice Mine, Jan. 15, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being electrocuted.  He was traveling home on the haulage road and stepped off the track to allow a motor trip to pass him, and in so doing his head came in contact with the power line, voltage 500.  Entry was 16 feet wide at this point and there was a shelter hole on the opposite side, in the Alice Mine, Sept. 6, 1912.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a fall of slate, in the Alice Mine, March 21, 1900.  It is not known what the deceased was doing at the time of the accident, as his partner John Bohacik was moving a piece of slate a short distance away, but it is supposed that he was sounding slate.  His partner informed the inspector that he spoke to the deceased about the slate but he, the deceased, said "it was all right, and after he loaded the mine car which was in the place he would put a post under it,")
