| DESCRIPTION: Remains of the mine openings, only depressions in the sides of the hills, partly buried slate dump and remnants of the railroad bed and two houses mark the site of the Fairbanks Mines, and the coal mining town of Fairbanks, ca.2005. |
| HISTORY: The fire in the Fairbanks mine is still burning but strong hopes are entertained of its being soon extingushed. The boiler and pump now in use are doing their work well, and a great quantity of water is pumped in daily. The water is now up to within a short distance of the roof, and if the pressure of the water does not break down some of the barriers it will soon reach the roof and subdue the fire. The wall along the tunnel has been strengthened with strong oak braces, and everything has been made secure as possible. The men are all anxious to see the fire extinguished as it is a question of bread and butter with them. [from "The Indiana Progress," Indiana, PA, Nov. 23, 1882.]
From the Reports of the Inspectors of Mines for Pennsylvania,
for 1889. In ca.1889 the Fairbanks Mine employed 166 miners, 21 company men, 13 drivers and runners, 4 doorboys and helpers, for a total of 205 men and boys inside the mine. 2 blacksmiths, 2 engineers and firemen, 8 company men outside, 3 superintendents, book-keepers and clerk, for a total of 230 men employed in 1889. |
