A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Eureka Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Eureka Mines & Coke Works, Eureka / Jacobs Creek, South Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.     The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, town histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..  No coal company records exist.
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Killed.  Killed instantly by a fall of slate, in the Eureka Mine, Dec. 19, 1905.  He had fired a shot, loaded one mine wagon and had a second mine wagon almost loaded with coal from under the slate when the slate fell.  An examination of the place showed that no posts had been placed under the slate, which measured 7 feet by 3 1/2 feet by 8 inches, in the Eureka Mine.)

(Killed.  Killed instantly by coming in contact with an electirc wire, 550 volts, on the haulage road, where a stationary engine is located.  He had his coat hanging on a mine post at the engine and the electric feed wire was attached to the post on the opposite side from where his coat was hanging and as he was reaching for his coat from the side the wires were on, his head came in contact with the electric wire, in the Eureka Mine, Feb. 9, 1910.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed as he was trying to open the door for the trip to pass through.  The boy it seems had forgotten to open the door and told the driver so; the driver was coming down a steep grade and told the boy to get out of the way, but in place of doing so he jumped to open the  door in front of the trip and was caught, in the Eureka Mine, June 22, 1892.)

(Emigrated from Ireland ca.1870's.);
(Worked at the Eureka Mine building the coke works.);
(Injured on Dec. 14, 1884, in an explosion while clearing tree strumps for the coke works, removed to Mercy Hospital, in Pittsburgh, PA, were he remained till June 10, 1885.  Recovered and continued to work until 1895, when the miners labor unrest encouraged him to return to Ireland.);

(Carl K. Mherling also worked at the Darr Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA.  Carl K. Mherling was killed in the Darr Mine disaster, Dec. 19, 1907.  He is buried in the West Newton, PA Cemetery.)

(He was engaged cleaning up his room preparatory to having it cut by the mining machine.  He had but a small quantity of slate remaining up, which fell and caught him.  When the body was found by the machine men it was lying upon the bottom with the head under quite a small piece of slate, as the slate had broken into two pieces in falling.)
