Denmark Mine  (Manor Valley Mine)


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Denmark Mine, Claridge, Penn Twp, Westmoreland Co., PA.    The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Injured.  Foot injured by a fall of slate, in the Denmark Mine, June 3, 1889.)

(Hungarian Miner, Coal Loader ca.1906, Denmark Mine, Claridge, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 31, single);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by mining machine in loosening the front jack while the machine was in motion, in the Denmark Mine, Sept. 4, 1906. He died six hours later.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed in the Denmark Mine, Jan. 8, 1903, by jumping on a loaded wagon just about 10 feet from a door.  He must have missed his footing and was pulled between the mine door and a mine car, killing him instantly.  He was a miner and had no business on the wagon.)

(Killed.  Seriously injured in the Denmark Mine, February 10, 1902, by a fall of slate and death resulted on the 12th inst.  The accident occurred in pillar workings and was the result of not spragging the coal. The coal had been undermined to a depth of about two and one-half feet and for a distance of nine feet.  Ansets was passing the face of the coal when it suddenly fell.)

The polish men lighted their fuse and yelled "Fire."  The Austrians were in the act of lighting their fuse, but became excited and all went to a place of saftely until the shot went off.  The Austrians said that they had not lighted their fuse.  They all went back to light it, and as they got over the ditch the shot went off, with the above result, in the Denmark Mine, Feb.23, 1906.)

(Injured about the face by a blast of dynamite.  There were firing two shots in a ditch and were to light the fuses at the same time. The polish men lighted their fuse and yelled "Fire."  The Austrians were in the act of lighting their fuse, but became excited and all went to a place of safety until the shot went off.  The Austrians said that they had not lighted their fuse.  They all went back to light it, and as they got over the ditch the shot went off, with the above result, in the Denmark Mine, Feb.23, 1906.)

(Injured. Burned on the hands and face by the explosion of powder in one of the men's canisters while they were being hauled by an electric motor to their working place in the mine.  The motor ran on to a fall of slate, that was on the track, which broke the contact of the current from motor to rail, thus sending it through the couplings and draw bars of the mine cars to the rail; and one of the powder cans on the draw bar in the mine car was ignited from the cause, in the Denmark Mine, Sept. 17, 1906.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a small piece of roof falling on his head while working on the main haulage road.  The piece of roof fell about twelve feet before it struck him, in the Denmark Mine, July 11, 1912.)

Burned on the hands and face by the explosion of powder in one of the men's canisters while they were being hauled by an electric motor to their working place in the mine.  The motor ran on to a fall of slate, that was on the track, which broke the contact of the current from motor to rail, thus sending it through th couplings and draw bars of the mine cars to the rail; and one of the powder cans on the draw bar in the mine car was ignited from the cause, in the Denmark Mine, Sept. 17, 1906.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed at the Denmark Mine on January 26, 1903, by a fall of coal and slate. He was undermining at the end of a butt in his room, with his back toward the butt, when it fell and caught him.  He did not have any sprags under the coal.)

(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  October, 1909, Paul Ross was arrested for using an open light in a satefy lamp section of Denmark Mine, Manor Gas Coal Company.  He plead guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of $5.00 and costs.)

(Injured.  Injured about the face by a blast of dynamite.  There were firing two shots in a ditch and were to light the fuses at the same time. The polish men lighted their fuse and yelled "Fire."  The Austrians were in the act of lighting their fuse, but became excited and all went to a place of saftely until the shot went off.  The Austrians said that they had not lighted their fuse.  They all went back to light it, and as they got over the ditch the shot went off, with the above result. In the Denmark Mine, Feb.23, 1906.)

(Killed.  Electrocuted by trolley wire carrying 500 to 550 volts, on an entry.  He failed to turn the trolley pole before backing the motor and the trolley jumped off, and while trying to replace it he came in contact with the wire, in the Denmark Mine, July 10, 1917.)

(Injured. Hand blown off by exploding dynamite at the face of an entry, in the Denmark Mine, Nov.5, 1907.  After igniting the fuse he retired but did not give the charge sufficient time to explode before returning to it.)

(Killed.  Electrocuted on the traveling way on his way out of the mine.  He went under the board fence placed to protect employes from the feed wire (stooping low to do so), to get water for his carbide lamp from the ditch below the wire, and raised his head up against the wire, which carried 500 to 550 volts, in the Denmark Mine, Aug. 23, 1917.)
Sobski, Louis
(Polish Miner, Laborer ca.1909, Denmark Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 39, married, 2 childen.);
(Killed.  Instantly killed by being crushed between railroad car and post under the tipple.  He was employed to keep the slack shoveled from the end of the chute, so as to load the cars full.  It is supposed that he undertook to drop down his loaded car and an empty car coupled behind, and in some way got between the cars and was squeezed against the tipple post.  There were no witnesses to the accident.  Outside the Denmark Mine, Dec. 16, 1909)

(Killed.  Found dead under the front mine car of a loaded trip of mine cars on an entry.  The grade in the entry was slightly against the loads, the mule had to pull and the speed could not be faster than a slow walk.  There was ample clearances and height, in the Denmark Mine, March 11, 1916.)

(Killed.  Was Fatally injured at the Denmark Mine by a fall of slate, April 11, 1903.  He died the following day. He was finishing a rib, and in taking out the last posts the one in the road-way liberated a large piece of slate, which fell on him and crushed him.)
