A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Isabella Furnace Mine (Cokeville Mine) & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Isabelle Furnace Mine (Cokeville Mine) & Coke Works, Cokeville, Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.  The miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

(Injured.  He was going in with his mule very fasr, contrary to the rules of the mine, and his mine car jumped the track and ran against the coal, catching his leg and injuring it so badly that it had to be amputated, in the Isabella Mine, Aug. 5, 1886.)

(Killed.  Killed by falling of the trestle between the two lines of coke ovens, at Isabella Furnace Mine & Coke Works, March 24,1898.);
(He was assisting in building a trestle between the two lines of coke ovens and in some manner lost his balance and fell to the road below, a distance of about 20 feet, landing on his head and shoulders.  He was picked up and carried to a neighboring house and Drs. Klingensmith and Rutledge of Blairsville were summoned. Mr. O'Rouke was conscious from the time of the accident and seemd to realize the fact that he was fatally injured.  The deceased is survived by two sons and a daughter.)

(Killed.  Crushed by fall of slate, in Isabella Mine, June 19, 1902);
(Peter Rosetti was so seriously injured by a fall of slate at face of room in the Isabella Mine, June 19, that death resulted on the 30th inst.  He had been warned in the morning, by the fire boss as to the dangerous condition of the slate in his room, who ordered him to secure it with timber.  The fire boss marked with chalk the places where the timber should be set, but Rosetti failed to heed the warning.);
