A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the Claridge Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Claridge Mine, Claridge, Penn Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.     The miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

They had taken out all the mine posts on one side and had commenced to draw the posts on the other side. Otceble had not taken many out when he cut one of the posts with his axe.  He insisted upon knocking the post out, and struck it again, when the roof fell five feet thick and covered him up, in the Claridge Mine, Sept. 22, 1909.)

(Killed.  Instantly killed by fall of roof coal and rock, in the Claridge Mine, Nov. 24, 1903.  He was drawing pillars in company with his partner and did not have enough mine posts set, and what they had were too far away from the face of the coal. The rock began to work and they commenced to set another  row of post, but it was too late.  The rock broke across the posts and caught Partley. His partner escaped uninjured.)

(George Scott was instantly killed January 11th in the Claridge Mine by a fall of slate.  George Thomas, a driver, on making inquiry of William Marionwalt, who worked in an adjoining room, as to whether or not had seen Scott, was informed by him that he had heard Scott working.  The two men then proceeded to the place and removed the fall and found Scott's body there under.)

(Killed.  Fatally injured by being struck by a trip of empty mine cars on the rope haulage road, in the Claridge Mine, Sept. 26, 1903.);
(On September 26, Frank Veditz, Austrian, Mine Laborer, was fatally injured in the Claridge Mine by being struck with an empty trip of mine cars. He died ten hours later. He was 150 feet inside the pit mouth going out after rails and walking on the empty track. He walked right into the empty trip which was coming in. If he had been looking he would have seen it, for the light from the out-side shone in very bright. The trip of mine cars also made a great deal of noise. He had been warned by his partner to wait until the trip came in.)
