A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Victor Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Victor Mines, Spangler, Cambria Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Swedish Miner Boy, Door Boy ca.1904, Victor No. 1 Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 17, single.);
(Injured.  Leg crushed and amputation necessary.  Victim went to sleep and was run over by a mine motor and mine cars, in the Victor No. 1 Mine, Aug., 26, 1904.)
Arrow, Thomas
(English Miner, Roadman ca.1905, Victor No. 2 Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 63, married.);
(Killed. Killed by a fall of mine roof on the haulage road, in the Victor No. 2 Mine, Jan.. 4, 1905.  While assisting to get a motor trip on track.  The motor was pulling empty trip back and the mine cars caught a prop and knocked it out, and a piece of roof fell into the room neck where Arrow had taken shelter while the mine cars were being pulled back.)

Bornyak, Mike
(Slavonian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1905, Victor No. 3 Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 20, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of roof in a heading, in the Victor No. 3 Mine, Aug. 30, 1905.  He was working in a heading loading a mine car, when a piece of roof fell from between two slips and killed him almost instantly.)
