A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Valley Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Valley Mines, Johnstown, Riverside, Cambria Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Back and shoulder bruised by a fall of coal while mining at pillar workings, in the Valley No. 1 Mine, Sept. 10, 1917.)
Burchell, Henry
(American Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Valley Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 31, married.);
(Injured.  Three ribs broken by being struck by a lump of coal, flying from a shot.  He stood just in line with the blast, instead of going into a shelter hole, In the Valley Mine, June 4, 1906.)

Colisky, Stanley
(Polish Miner, Pick Miner ca.1912, Valley No. 1 Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 26, single.);
(Injured.  Leg broken by being caught by a mine wagon close to the face of his room, in th eValley No. 1 Mine, Sept. 10, 1912.)
Czorka, John
(Austrian Miner, Pick Miner ca.1906, Valley Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 27, single.);
(Killed.  Killed by a fall of coal, in the Valley Mine, June 16, 1906.  He had just fired a shot which failed to bring the coal down, and he lay down under it to mine further in, without securing it with sprags to protect himself, and the coal fell on him.)

(Injured.  Fingers crushed between mine cars and a prop, in the Valley No. 2 Mine, March 9, 1908.)
Dolinor, Paul
(Miner, Pick Miner ca.1912, Valley No. 1 Mine, Cambria Co., PA.);
(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  January, 1912.  Information was made against Paul Dolinor & Steve Pisovitch, miners, Valley Mine No. 1 of the Valley Smokeless Coal Company, Charging them with refusing to properly undermine the coal before blasting.  They pleaded guilty, and upon payment of the costs further sentence was suspended.)
Dovey, C. C.
(General Superintendent, ca.1912, Valley Smokeless Coal Company, Valley No. 1, No. 2 Mines, Cambria Co., PA.);
(Superintendent, ca.1912, of the Valley No. 1 & No. 2 Mines, Cambria Co., PA, for Valley Smokeless Coal Company, Johnstown, PA.);
(Prosecuted for Violations of the Mining Laws:  June, 1912.  Information was made against C. C. Dovey, Superintendent of the Valley No. 2 Mine of the Valley Smokeless Coal Company charging him with failing to provide an anemometer for the Mine Foreman to measure the velocity of the air, failing to sign the Mine Foreman's record book weekly, and failing to have chains or gates on the cages.  He plead guilty and was sentenced to pay a fine of $5.00 and the costs.);
