A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Lilly Mines


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Lilly No. 2 Mine, Lilly No. 3 Mine, Lilly Slope Mine, Lilly, Washington Twp., Cambria Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(Injured.  Hips bruised by a fall of of slate while removing a pillar, in the Lilly No. 2 Mine, April 11, 1912.)

McAtamney, John
(Miner, ca.1892, Lilly Slope Mine, Cambria Co., PA, Age 40, married.);
(John McTamany, a miner, was killed on Wednesday about noon in the valley of the Lilly Coal Company in Lilly. He was engaged in what is known as extra work by ….with John McCool when there was a sudden fall of slate. In this McTamany was caught and his death was almost instantaneous. He was aged forty years, was married and leaves a wife and family. This is the first fatal accident that has yet occurred in the mines. [from: Cambria Freeman, December 25, 1892.].);
(John died on December 19, 1892 when a fall of slate (roof of mine) fell on top of him and crushed him to death. He was working the colliery named Lilly Slope in Cambria County for the Lilly Coal Company. He is buried in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Summit, Pa. Nature and cause of accident: “Was killed by fall of slate; it was what was termed by miners a horse-back or bell, a very dangerous piece of rock; was an unavoidable accident.”);
