Rolling Mill Mine
(Cambria Mill Mine)
(Bethlehem No. 71 Mine) (ca.1856-1931), a drift portal
mine located across Stony Creek from the City of Johnstown, near were the
Johnstown Inclined Plane Railway was built, Yoder Hill "Westmont Hill" Johnstown,
Cambria Co., PA
[Mined the Upper Kittanning "C" coal seam.]
[Mine cars from the Rolling Mill Mine passed through the original drift portal,
which was located above the Conmeaugh River near the Incline Plane, and delivered
coal to the Cambria Iron Works via a Cambria Iron Company built trestle across
the Conemaugh River.]
[Coal from the Rollling Mill Mine was used by Cambria Iron Company, Johnstown,
PA.]
[The Cambria Iron Company and its successors, chiefly Bethlehem Steel, operated
the most productive mines in Cambria County. The company mined coal here
for more than a century. One of the most famous mines was the Rolling Mill
Mine, which was located in Yoder (Westmont) Hill, near the convergence of
the Little Conemaugh and Stoneycreek Rivers. One of the original portals
to the Rolling Mill Mine is still visible near the Inclined Plane - through
this portal coal was transported to the iron works on a company-built trestle.
On July 10, 1902, the Rolling Mill Mine became the site of one of the deadliest
accidents in U.S. mining history, when an explosion and resulting toxic gases
killed 112 miners, mostly recent immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe.
By the time the Rolling Mill Mine closed in 1931, it had yielded nearly 22.4
million tons of coal.]
[The Rolling Mill Mine mined the C Prime coal seam.]
[Disaster - Rolling Mill Mine Disaster - on July 10, 1902 an explosion of
gas & dust in the Rolling Mill Mine killed 112 miners.]
[Disaster - Rolling Mill Mine Disaster - on Oct. 24, 1906 an explosion of
gas & dust in the Rolling Mill Mine killed 7 miners.]
[Bethlehem Steel Company renamed the Rolling Mill Mine Bethlehem Mine No.
71.]
[When the Rolling Mill Mine (Bethlehem No. No. 71 closed in ca.1931,
it had yielded nearly 22.4 million tons of coal.]
