HISTORY:
In 1962 the Bethlehem Mines Corporation, a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corp., opened the Bethlehem No. 77B Mine (Brookdale Mine No. 77B) and Coal Preparation Plant.  This drift mine was an extension into the Lower Kittanning coal seam previously reached from Bethlehem Mine No. 72 (Rosedale Mine), a shallow shaft-mine in the Rosedale section of Johnstown.  This mine had become too costly to operate from the Johnstown opening and the Bethlehem No. 72 Mine (Rosedale Mine) was closed in ca.1959.  Bethlehem Mine No. 77B was set up for all-belt haulage to the preparation plant.  In addition to coal mined from Bethlehem No. 77B Mine, coal produced at other mines was shipped by truck to the plant for cleaning and sorting.  Trucks then hauled the coal primarily to Bethlehen Steel's Johnstown plants.  As a result of the slump in the steel industry in the late 1970's, Bethlehem Mines closed the Bethleham No. 77B Mine (Brookdale Mine) and the Preparation Plant in ca.1980.

There were four mine-related structures o the site in ca.1980.  The coal came directly from the mine into the four-story, cleaning plant where rock and sulfur were removed.  This structure has a concrete foundstio and sheet-metal siding.  From the cleaning plant, the coal traveled by conveyor to a six-story storage silo of reinforced concret construction.  Coal was then loaded from the silo into trucks for shipment.  Also on the site is a one-story building serving as a change house ad office.  None of these structures are currently i use, howeverm an acid-mine-drainage treatment was still operating.  The water from the mine is pumped into concrete holding tanks and is treated to reduce the acidity before it is released into the nearby stream.
