Gall, Andrew "Andy"

(Killed.  Instantly killed by being caught between a mine wagon and a coal pillar, in the Puritan Mine, Sept. 20, 1898.  He was caught between an overturning mine car and a rib.  Gall had brought a mine wagon from the face of No. 13 room on No. 2 Butt, off 1st right face entry.  On reaching the mouth of the room he stopped as usual to take the mule from in front of the wagon, as the grade on this entry is too heavy to allow the mule to go in front of the mine wagons.  Eli Gilson, aged 16 years, a trapper boy, stated at the investigation that he was standing near by at the time, and after Gall stopped the wagon he asked Gilson to unhook the mule and drive it into the room below.  This he did, as he had often done before, and after he had driven the mule into the room below, Gall called to him asking if the mule was out of the way.  He replied that it was.  Almost immediately he heard Gall make a moise.  He returned and found him fast between the wagon and coal pillar, and the rear end of the mine wagon was off the track.  Gall had placed himself between the rear end of the mine wagon and coal pillar on the low side of the road to push the mine wagon from the parting, and in attempting to do so he forced it off the track, with the result as above stated.)
Garland, Alfred
(American Miner, Mule Driver, ca.1906, Baggaley Mine, Westmoreland Co., PA, Age 37, married.);
(Killed.  Killed, caught between a mule and mine car, in the Baggaley Mine, Aug.22, 1906.);
(Aug. 22, 1906, Alfred Garland, American, driver, was fatally injured on No. 7 face entry, right, in the Baggaley Mine.  Garland was riding on the front of a seven-car trip and as it approached the foot of the hill it attained such speed that it was pushing the team in front of it.  When the trip reached the foot of the hill near No. 1 entry, Garland fell from the trip to the side of the road, where he was found by Archie Shultz and George Henselman.  Death resulted in about fifteen minutes.  The state of affairs in and about the vicinity where he was found showed that he received his injuries before he fell from the trip, and in all propability has been crushed between the mine car and the mule or mine roof.)
