A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Atlantic Mines & Coke Works


Following is a partial list of the miners, coke workers, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Atlantic Mines & Coke Works, Atlantic No. 1 & Snydertown; Atlantic,  Derry Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA.   The miners names have been research and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian:  newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of miners submitted by various people, etc. .
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

Cronnin, James

(Killed.  Instantly killed by a blast in the Atlantic No. 3 Mine, April 10, 1905.  He and William Wilson and John McGuire were engaged in blasting up bottom in an entry.  Three blasts had been prepared and lighted when they retreated to a place of safety. Two blast reports were heard, and they waited about five minutes when Cronnin suggested that they go up and see what they had done as he believed that two of the blasts had gone off at the same time. Wilson and McGuire hesitated, saying they had better wait a while longer and be sure.  Cronnin started and on reaching the place the third blast went off with the above result.  Wilson was also injured about the head and face.);

Stevenson, William

(Killed.  Fatally injured;  caught between a mine car and a coal pillar, in the Atlantic No. 2 Mine, Jan. 9, 1901.  Death resulted in about one-half hour.  The accident occurred on No. 1 "Butt" entry of No. 1 face entry left.  Stevenson was employed as a driver and had brought a wagon from no. 10 room, which jumped the track going down the entry.  He called some miners to put in on the track;  they came and while they were engaged in so doing, Stevenson took his mule and went to No. 15 room for another wagon.  On reaching the entry with this wagon it suddenly increased in speed.  He applied the brake but it did not check the speed of the wagon.  Knowing that the other wagon was off the track farther down the entry and thinking that a collision would certainly occur, in which his mule would be injured and possibly killed, he attempted to pass the car to unhook his mule for the purpose of turning it off into a room and saving it from injury.  But just as he was passing the wagon it jumped the track and he was caught between it and the coal pillar.)

(May 16, 1906, Steven Vitzcovish, Austrian, miner, was instantly killed by a fall of slate in No. 15 room off No. 2 butt north no. 2 east face entry, in the Atlantic No. 3 Mine.  He had fired a blast in the coal and instead of waiting for the smoke to clear away proceeded to the face to see what the blast had done, and the slate fell on him.  A post had been knocked down where the slate fell.);
