A Memorial to the Coal Miners that Worked the
Chickasaw Mine


Following is a partial list of the miners, mine employees and company store employees that worked the Chickasaw Mine, Chickasaw, Madison Twp., Armstrong Co., PA.   The coal miners names have been researched and complied from various sources by Raymond A. Washlaski, Historian: newspaper obits, newspaper articles, Pennsylvania Bureau of Mines Reports, township histories, and names of coal miners submitted by various people, etc..
The Nationalities listed for various miners, are taken directly from "Report of the Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA" as reported for the various years.  Those listed as American, could be either native born or naturalized citizens.

Since 1870, Pennsylvania's Annual Report on Mining Activities has recorded 51,483 deaths from mining accidents-- 31,113 deaths in anthracite mines and 20,370 deaths in bituminous mines.

(American Miner, Motorman ca.1912, Chickasaw Mine, Armstrong Co., PA, Age 28, married.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by an electric motor on the haulage road near the facew of an entry while coupling his trip to the motor.  The motor was not near enough to the trip of mine cars and he attempted to move it forward while standing by the side of it.  Instead of moving the motor forward he reversed it backward and when he attempted to regain his seat he was caught between the coal rib and the motor, in the Chickasaw Mine, Oct. 4, 1912.  Died the following day at the Kittanning Hospital.)

(Injured.  Foot injured by a mining machine truck at an entrance to a room, in the Chickasaw Mine, Oct. 15, 1912.)

(Injured.  Leg fractured.  A motor jumped the track and threw him down.  Outside the Chickasaw Mine, Oct. 22, 1917.)

Whelabaugh, Hays
(American Miner, Spragger ca.1912, Chickasaw Mine, Armstrong Co., PA, Age 23, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Fatally injured by mine cars on the main entry road.  He jumped off the front end of the triup when it approached the top of the grade and ran down the grade in front of thge mine cars to open a door on the entry.  When he was doing this the trip broke away from the motor and in trying to step on the front cars tp control them he was thrown in front of them and the front mine car passed over his legs, in the3 Chickasaw Mine, Nov. 12, 1912.  Died the same day.)
Wright, Thomas
(American Miner, Mine Foreman ca.1912, Chickasaw Mine, Armstrong Co., PA, Age 43, married, 1 child.);
(Killed.  Killed by mine cars while standing in the shoofly between the parallel entries near the face of the main entry.  The electric motor, with twenty-five empty mine cars, passed throught the said shoofly, intending to place the mine cars in the parallel entry.  But the spragger failed to close the switch, and the motorman pushed the empty trip back through the shoofly, and it collided with the loaded trip tht was going out of thge main entry and Wright was caught and crushed between the mine fcars and the coal rib, in the Chickasaw Mine, May 16, 1912.)
